April 23, 2010, Newsletter Issue #140: Mental Toughness for Marathoners

Tip of the Week

I heard from my running buddy today about how he got lost during a trail marathon over the weekend and ended up running 40 miles, including several stream crossings.

But he still finished, although it took him more than 7 hours. I truly admire his mental toughness--he was by himself for much of the race, and I think I would have gotten totally freaked out if I had been that lost. But he stuck it out, and I agree that it is good mental training for a 100-mile race that he has planned for sometime this summer.

I think I'll stick to the standard marathon distance, but mental toughness is just as useful during a 26.2-mile run, even if you don't get lost.
