March 19, 2010, Newsletter Issue #135: A Final Olympic Blog: All About Attitude

Tip of the Week

Tonight is the women's long program in Olympic figure skating, a favorite event for me and many, many other TV viewers.  As the 2010 Winter Olympics wrap up, over the next few days, here'a a final thought: When I'm watching the Olympics, one of the things that stands out among the winners is their ability to focus. It's not that jumping and spinning in the air isn't tough enough, but you have to do it in front of noisy, bell-clangers (half-pipe) or a rink full of people who may or may not start clapping in time with your music.

As anyone who has run a marathon knows, marathon training takes focus, too. We can't all make it to the Olympics, but try to apply some Olympic attitude to training for your next marathon.

Maybe you only have an hour, or even half an hour, to do a short run or go to the gym. But if you focus on really enjoying that easy run, or pushing it if you're doing a tempo run,  or concentrating on your cross-training and getting in those key exercises,  you'll reap the benefits on race day, and you'll be able to focus on running your best marathon.

Happy Running!
