In this second week of the winter Olympics in Vancouver, a another Olympic-themed tip that we recreational runners can apply: Assemble your team.
Even Olympic athletes who won't get their names on the news have their supporters. Especially for beginning runners, encouragement from friends, colleagues, and family members when you are training for that first race or that first marathon is a real psychological boost.
But the more you run, you may want to assemble another type of team, including a good podiatrist, massage therapist, chiropractor, sports injury physician, and even your favorite salesperson at the local running store. These are members of your running/marathon training team that can help make your running more successful and more fun. Yes, you have to pay them, but if you are taking your running to another level, you will find them worth every penny in the preventing and treatment of any running-related injures,
Runners' problems run the gamut from choosing the wrong shoes to undergoing surgery, and your team is there to help you. If you aren't sure where to start finding medical professionals who know about running, start by joining the listserve of your local running club and asking for recommendations. Chances are you'll get several suggestions, and you'll find someone in your area who can help you.
Happy Running!
