July 16, 2010, Newsletter Issue #152: Good News for Knees!

Tip of the Week

More good news for injured athletes has come out of the annual American Orhopaedic Society for Sports Medicine meeting, which occurred last week in Rhode Island.

Transplanting bone and cartilage into an injured knee is often seen as an interim way to treat sports injuries, but data presented at the meeting suggest that people who have this treatment can return to sports without additional procedures.

In a study of 25 athletic adults younger than 50 years who were followed for an average of four years, all were able to perform at least light jogging and cycling, whereas only 3 could do any physical activity immediately before surgery.
