June 11, 2010, Newsletter Issue #147: John Wooden Week Tip: Make the Best of It

Tip of the Week

In honor of UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, I'm sharing another of his quotes that I think applies to marathons and running.

"Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out."

Marathons can be unpredictable, and sometimes you have to make the best of what happens. For example, if your long-awaited PR marathon day is 75 degrees and sunny at the start, you may have to reset your goal from PR to tempo run, finishing as strong as possible. You might still surprise yourself with a PR, or you'll be proud of your ability to get in a good workout by adapting to the situation, rather than pushing for the PR and ending up in a medical tent with heat exhaustion.

Don't be afraid to modify your goals to maximize a less than favorable running situation.

Happy Running!
