January 8, 2010, Newsletter Issue #126: Beginning Runners: The Right Way to a 5K in May

Tip of the Week

Since not everyone sees everything on this site, I wanted to share some advice I gave in answer to a question last week about how to get started training for a 5K in May.

First things first:  if you are new to running, be sure you have a pair of actual running shoes, not walking, aerobic, or tennis shoes. If you already have running shoes, great! If not, visit a specialty running store in your area and ask the salespeople for help in choosing the right shoe for your foot type.

If you aren't sure, or if your running shoes are more than a year old, treat yourself to a new pair of running shoes to start your 5K training.

For the training itself, if you have a May race in mind, try this 15-week schedule developed by running expert and Olympian Jeff Galloway, http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/5k.html
