January 22, 2010, Newsletter Issue #128: More Evidence for the Healing Power of Chocolate

Tip of the Week

This may be a bit of a stretch for a running blog, but not really. The ability to eat more chocolate can be a great running motivator.

Anyway . . . I like to report on interesting medical studies, so here it is. A study published in the Journal of Proteome Research (from the American Chemical Society) offers more evidence that chocolate is good for reducing stress. This is no surpise to chocolate lovers everywhere, but the researchers found biological signs of the positive impact of chocolate on stress.

In this study, people who reported being highly stressed ate an ounce and a half of dark chocolate (less than a quarter cup of chocolate chips) a day for two weeks. After two weeks, they showed lower levels of stress hormones than at the start of the study.

In addition, chocolate was associated with improvements in  stress-related biochemical  imbalances.

Here's the link to a press release about the study.

Meanwhile, enjoy chocolate (yes, in moderation) when a running injury (or anything else) stresses you out!
