December 4, 2009, Newsletter Issue #121: Let It Snow, But Don't Let It Ice

Tip of the Week

Snow! The DC area got its first snow of the season on Saturday morning! I'm temporarily off from running right now, recovering from a procedure, but I was watching from my kitchen window as what started out as rain at 8:30 am turned into fluffy, white flakes by 10 am or so.

I went to college in upstate NY (Colgate University) and I always liked running while the snow was falling. You don't get wet the way you do when you run in the rain, and I find it very peaceful. Of course, that means it's time to get out the winter running gear & apparel. But if you have layers, and some good gloves and a hat or earband, the snow shouldn't keep you from running. Ice is another story. Ice is one of the few weather conditions that will keep me from a run. If you live somewhere where the street or sidewalk doesn't get treated, and it gets icy, you are better off doing an indoor workout if you can or settling for a careful walk. Or, if you live where there's enough snow, you'll get a good workout just from shoveling your driveway. But the point is, running in the snow is usually fun, but trying to run on ice is usually not. And how mad would you be if you ended up injured?

So let it snow, at least enough to look pretty, but don't let it ice!

Happy Running!
