December 25, 2009, Newsletter Issue #124: Have Yourself A Merry Little Holiday Run

Tip of the Week

I just got back from a few days of visiting relatives, and once again I realized how much I love running for the time it gives me for myself, and I also appreciated the fact that a run doesn't have to be long to be wonderful for both mind and body.

It's hard to fit long runs in when you're away from home and there are holiday activities and family members whom you don't want to keep waiting around so you can run for an hour and a half. This year, I went for a half hour run on Christmas morning and was back almost before anyone missed me. I would have liked to have run longer, but on this particular day it wasn't in the cards. But I knew that when I went out, and I resolved to really enjoy that half hour. I saw the sun rise on a country road, avoided being harassed by well-meaning but noisy local dogs, and allowed myself to be thankful that I was able to run at all (and that the road wasn't icy).

I was in a great mood afterwards, even though it wasn't the long run I might have preferred.

So don't undestimate the power of the short-distance run, especially during the holiday season.

Happy Running!
