December 11, 2009, Newsletter Issue #122: Cookies: The Other Good Carbs (If You're Open-Minded)

Tip of the Week

I'd like to paraphrase a quote from one of my favorite people, Julia Child. She was one of many who said "everything in moderation."

When I'm not running, my next favorite thing to do is bake cookies, especially around Christmas. I mean batches and batches of cookies--gingersnaps, chocolate mint sticks, cookies with those cute red and green holiday m&ms (I love those!). I make them for friends, relatives, and colleagues.

Of course there's some sampling that goes on, and I think that's fine. I try to eat relatively healthfully most of the time, and if I end up eating half a dozen cookies over the course of a day for a few days, I count them as carbs that provide energy. I do exercise enough restraint not to eat a whole dozen at once. And at least if I bake the cookies myself, I like to think that they are better for me than store-bought cookies (not that I would turn down one of those holiday white chocolate Oreos).

The point is, don't feel guilty about enjoying those holiday cookies (in moderation)--that's part of why we run, right?

Happy Holidays, and Happy Running!
