When Ice Hits: Indoor OptionsWell, the weather folks are talking about some actual snow/ice to go with the cold weather we've been having in the mid-Atlantic. I don't mind running in the cold; I actually enjoy it when I'm dressed right. But icy sidewalks are NOT a runner's friend. When it's icy, think of it as an excuse to give your running muscles a rest and do some easy cross training. You don't need to go crazy, but even a 20-30 minute workout on the stationary bike can help cure cabin fever. If you happen to have a bike or treadmill at home, great. But if you don't, there are other options. So, what to do if you can't run outside? If you can get to the gym, bring a book you've been wanting to read and check out the stationary bike. Elliptical trainers or treadmills are better accompanied by music or TV--the up and down motion doesn't lend itself to reading. If you are truly stuck at home and snowed in, keep these ideas in mind for a winter workout. Go out and clean the snow off your car, sidewalk, driveway. That can be more of a workout than you think. Walking through snow is harder than walking on a clear sidewalk. If you can, go sledding. Walking up a hill carrying a sled (and maybe a kid or two) is a workout. And relax and use the opportunity to stretch and catch up on your sleep, the roads will be clear before long! Stay warm, and happy cross training!
