August 7, 2009, Newsletter Issue #104: Early Fall Marathons: Bigger Isn't Always Better
1
Tip of the Week
I have mentioned two big early fall marathons this week: Chicago and Baltimore. But I also want to make a pitch for the smaller marathons. You may have a great small marathon just a short drive away, and don't underestimate the joys of a start that's not a mob scene, plenty of water, and the peacefulness of a relatively open road.
My personal example of such a marathon: The Green Mountain Marathon.
Held in South Hero, Vermont, this race had 174 finishers in 2008, with winning times of 2:26:38 for the men and 3:13:35 for the women.
I ran this race with my friend and college running teammate (and Vermont resident) Cathy Eustis, in 2003, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Rolling hills, but nothing too intimidating, very scenic with fall foliage, and cool temperatures. As I recall, they had tasty donuts at the finish--bonus! I also had a free place to stay, but I'm guessing that it's not hard to find a cheap hotel in the area. Make a weekend of it! Sound interesting? Check out the link on marathonguide.com for more info:
