Marathon Day Tips: Treat Your Feet Right
Another note (or knot) on marathon day: Double knot your shoes. Most veteran marathoners will do this, but it bears repeating for new runners. The last thing you need to worry about is your shoes coming untied, whether it's at the crowded start, or near the end when the last thing you want to do is bend over and retie!
One other marathon day foot tip: Be sure that you have a decent pair of moisture-wicking socks, but not a brand-new pair. Wearing brand-new socks isn't as risky as brand-new shoes, but my personal preference is to buy a new pair of socks before my last long run, wear them for the long run, then wash them and maybe wear them for one or two other runs during the last few weeks before the marathon. They will still feel soft and cushy, but they'll be just worn enough so they don't slide around in your shoes, the way some new socks can. I recommend Thorlos (the regular running socks, NOT the lightweight running socks) because I like the extra cushioning for marathon training and marathon day.
Ideally, buy a new version of whatever type of socks you have trained in. They should feel familiar.
Happy Running!
