Marathoners: Go With The (Yoga) Flow
I think yoga is excellent cross training for runners, but especially for marathoners. And as we find ourselves in fall marathon season, I want to reiterate my recommendation, for new marathoners (or new yogis) out there who may not realize that these two great activities taste great together (a little peanut butter cup humor there).
If you are about to run your first marathon in the next week or so, this isn't the time to try a strenuous power yoga class. But as you cut back on the mileage, you may be itching for some type of exercise. If you are somewhat new to yoga, and you do it occasionally, early in marathon week is a good time for an easy class, and you'll reap the benefits of that extra stretching on marathon day.
If you are really new to yoga, wait until after the marathon, then go for an easy class (or a beginner class). That extra blood flow will help with your recovery, and ease the post-race stiffies, even if it doesn't feel that great while stretching your legs in a high lunge. That post-marathon yoga is beneficial whether it's your first marathon or your fiftieth.
Happy Running!
