August 6, 2010, Newsletter Issue #155: When Cross Training Heats Up: Heated Yoga

Tip of the Week

I have been doing yoga for years, usually an ashtanga-type class once or twice a week. I have not felt compelled to try true Bikram, or "hot yoga," which I think involves temps of 105 degrees.

But a yoga studio in my area offers "heated" yoga, with a temp of about 95, and I thought I'd try it.

It was hot, and my feet kept slipping on my mat. A towel is definitely a good idea. But as far as cross training for running I have to say I felt more loose because of the heat, and I felt great at the end, like I had definitely had a workout. Also, I don't (so far) have much delayed onset muscle soreness, and that might be due to the warm temps as well. So, I might have to try it again next week. I might become a regular, although I won't necessarily abandon room temperature yoga either!
