May 14, 2010, Newsletter Issue #143: Don't Ignore the Health of Your Orthotics

Tip of the Week

I had my running orthotics refurbished recently, but unfortunately it didn't turn out quite right. My orthotics are a bit complex, with a lift on one side and extra padding in the metatarsal area under my big toe.

But my revised orthotics this time had too much padding.  I had a hard time fitting my foot into my [running shoe with the orthotic. Also, the excess padding meant that my feet couldn't flex, so I was starting to develop some plantar fascitis. I decided to give the orthotics about 6 weeks, which was probably too long. I have cut back on my mileage in the last few months due to some medical issues, and I thought it might be a long break-in period. But I'm taking my own advice this week and calling my podiatrist. I may need to have my orthos re- refurbished, but there is no reason to run uncomfortably.

Bottom line: the right [orthotics should help, not hurt. If yours hurt, get help!
