January 1, 2010, Newsletter Issue #125: Finding Your Edge Post-Injury

Tip of the Week

I hate being hurt. I hate not being able to do whatever workouts I want. I'm not a good patient, and one of the hardest things for me when I get injured is working my way back to full strength.

As I learned again recently, recovery is about playing with the edge of what you can do without going over it.

I was off from running for several weeks, and I started back by running for 15 min, then 20, 25, 30, and worked my way up to 45 min. But I didn't take my own advice about following more of a stepwise approach, and going back to 25 after I did 30 or 40 min. of running.

Now I'm paying for pushing the envelope. I'm hurting, and mad at myself, and hoping that I haven't jeopardized my recovery.

The moral of the story is to try, try as hard as you can, NOT to do more just because you feel good. It's hard, but it is the smarter move when you are recovering from running injuries, or coming back after any other medical issue that kept you from running for some time.

Happy Running!
