July 17, 2009, Newsletter Issue #101: Happy Father's Day!

Tip of the Week

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there, whether you are runners yourselves, fathers of runners, or both. My dad got me interested in running. He has always been athletic, and got into running during the running boom in the 1970s. He joined a local running club, and he and some friends trained for and ran the National Capital Marathon in Ottawa, Canada, in 1980. My mother, my brother, and I went along to watch. We stayed overnight the night before and saw the start, then my mom said something like "well, let's go find something to do for a few hours." I was 10 at the time, and I didn't really think about what running for several hours was like. I can't remember my dad's time offhand, but I think it was about 3:30.

I started running a few years later, in junior high, and I haven't stopped since. He made it to a lot of cross country and track meets in high school and college, and supported my efforts when I decided to try running a marathon. He took me to Boston for my first Boston Marathon in 1993, and he remains my biggest fan.

Thanks, Dad! And thanks to all the dad's out there.
