June 26, 2009, Newsletter Issue #98: The Next Great Sports Supplement--Quercetin?

Tip of the Week

Maybe some of you have heard of quercetin, maybe not. But you are no doubt familiar with apples, grapes, berries, and red onions.

The skins of these foods are excellent sources of quercetin, an anti-oxidant that was significantly associated with improved endurance and VO2 max in healthy, but untrained adult men and women.

This was a small study (only 12 people). Half of them took 500 mg of quercetin mixed with Tang (ick) each day for a week, while the other half just drank the Tang (still ick).

But when the subjects' endurance was tested by having them ride a stationary bike to the point of fatigue, those in the quercetin group had a 13% increase in endurance and 4% increase in VO2 max compared with the control group.

Here's more about the study:

So, will quercetin become the next ingredient energy bars and sports drinks? Time will tell, but meanwhile it looks like there's yet another reason to eat that apple a day.

Happy Running!
