December 18, 2009, Newsletter Issue #123: Rare Cross-Training Opportunity: Snow Walking

Tip of the Week

Well, the Mid-Atlantic (including Washington, DC, where I am) is getting pounded with snow today. It started last night, and it has been steady all day. We are probably pushing 10 inches in DC, and I've heard that our outer suburbs have had more than a foot of snow.

Thankfully, I didn't have to drive anywhere today, so I have mostly been hunkered down at home, reading, writing Christmas cards, and baking brownies. Running outside was NOT an option today, but I like being out in the snow. It's fun if you have the right gear, which I do. So, I put on my parka and boots and went for a half hour or so walk down the sidewalk.

Remember, walking in the snow is it's own cross training. Here's how: First, you are engaging your quads and hamstrings more because it's harder to move your feet through several inches of snow. Second, you are engaging your core muscles to help you keep your balance. So even a short walk may leave you feeling like you've had a mini workout, at least it did for me. And I think that means an extra brownie!

Happy Running, be careful in the snow!
